  • Farmlevel Story

    Farmlevel

Once the governing capital of Spanish South America, the Viceroyalty of Peru - as it was called from 1564 to 1824 - is endowed with the winning combination of some of the world’s greatest biodiversity and topography. Notwithstanding, political and economic factors have stifled the growth and progression of the coffee sector making us all-the-more-enthusiastic about stumbling upon gems like this lot of Armando Soncco Toledo’s.

Following its introduction in the late 1700s, coffee production in Peru developed slowly over the course of 200 years until the late 1900s when political and economic changes would set it back in a big way. In the wake of said instability, non-governmental organizations (I.e., Fair Trade) would step in to shape the future of Peruvian coffee production, creating a network of farming cooperatives among which producers would collect. Today nearly 25% of Peruvian producers are organized in farming cooperatives where coffees are bulked and marketed under a common name.

Armando Soncco Toledo is one such producer found farming his modest two hectares in the Bolivian-border-region of Puno. This outstanding lot of Armando’s has been kept separate from the rest of his cooperative, Tupac Amaru, and for this we’re thankful. Armando pulps his freshly picked coffee cherries on-site before they undergo dry fermentation and raised-bed drying.
