This process requires nearly 6 liters of water to process 1 kilogram of coffee. The coffee moves through a disc-pulper, fermentation tank, and then on to a series of washing channels until it's officially labeled "clean." In a water-scarce climate, this resource-intensive process has resulted in many Western Ethiopian mills to rely on the dry process heavily. With assistance from Washington DC-based NPO, TechnoServe, the Yukro Cooperative can now use an eco-friendly pulper called the Penagos. This Colombian de-mucilage technology can wash the same 1 kilogram of coffee with only 1 liter of water. The Yukro Cooperative is now able to save more water while showcasing the beautiful harvest from the Gera Woreda coffee farmers.
